Creative Media Practice Evaluation

This project for Creative Media Practice required us to create a three minute audio sequence that would consist of a soundscape to go over a 3 minute experimental film which we would then be required to film and edit all based on the theme Sense Of Place. Before the project started we had semesters and lectures that had given us an insight into an introduction of experimental film and sound pieces that  had created different atmospheres.  Myself and Heather Hall decided to work together as we knew each other and therefore could easily communicate well when needing to meet up to come across different ideas and concept outlines for a piece.

The first element we needed to explore was to come up with ideas that could make a soundscape for the audio project. We drew out a mind map which explored sounds and through this we came up with a concept idea which consisted of two parts. The first part would consist of a set of sequences containing morning routine sounds that you may find before your day starts. For example the sound of a kettle boiling or the sound of someone picking up their keys, all the sounds you may find when you're waking up and getting ready for the day. Critically however the identity of the character in the audio project and the experimental film would not be reviled as we wanted to add some mystical effect around him. We developed the character as being a criminal and murderer but the audience would not realize this till after the set of sequences at the end of the piece. The first influence that allowed and helped us to come up with the idea was that of Salaryman by Jake Knight (2002). In this we see a set of sequences that shows how a businessman's life seems to be a never ending cycle of routines where everyday seems and feels the same to the character shown. Again this idea of routines and sequences was similar to the idea Heather and I had come up with so it was interesting to see how they had edited it.  With repeated sequences and different tempos within pace of the editing it linked in with the soundscape created for the film. The second part of the film would then start to show the person for who they really are, so once they have left the house we would record their journey till he meets a certain character that would owe him money and an argument would commence. We wanted this argument to come right at the end of the journey so that journey could have built up tension and we find out what happens right at the end before cutting to black and cutting the sound suddenly. The concept for our work however then was to create tension by building up the set of three sequences with pace and volume before then cutting to the journey also building up tension as he confronts this character at the end. Another influence for our work was the film Blue Velvet (1986) by David Lynch, this gave me inspiration due to the way the soundtrack creates an atmosphere as well as the way its filmed but what is so brilliant about the opening sequence is the idea that little things start to creep in to make the audience uncomfortable which is the approach I am taking with my audio piece and experimental film. This is also when we realized what our target audience and genre for this piece would be as swearing and violence would make this piece substantially more effective so anyone over the age of 15. we would advertise for people that are into crime and thriller films.

The second element we worked on after coming up with the idea was to work on these sequences and gain a library of sounds that we could use while editing the sequences together. Having had a few seminars and some practice using a zoom H4n condenser mic Heather and I were able to record the sounds within the sequences. This was done in my kitchen using objects and household appliances such as mugs, saucepans, frying pans and more kitchen and bedroom based objects that were on the list we had come up with of all the sounds we could record. I took the job role of recording the sounds whereas Heather took the job role of making them so she would pull a mug from a cupboard and put bacon in a frying pan. This worked effectively and after about an hour we were able to gather the required library of sounds that could be made into when editing sequences. I was also able to record the second part of the audio piece as this required footsteps and then a number of different atmospheres from different locations which we had scouted, these included a under path, a couple of different alleyways and a few pavements alongside busy roads and a gravel car park. Having recorded all these the final recordings we needed were those of the argument, we picked two people with voices we thought would be good for an argument and these were two people we knew. Having written the very short script of 2 or 3 lines each for the character we were able to record them quickly and were ready for editing.

For the edit I decided to use soundtrack pro as this is what I was used to and having been so newly introduced to pro tools I wanted to use something I was familiar with for my first audio project. I put the sounds on the timeline and cut them into place for the set of sequences. These sequences were then duplicated two times so there were three, the second faster than the first and third faster than second and third, the final sound of the door was then added to the final sequence and the atmosphere sounds were added with the footsteps and finally the argument at the end of the piece. The pan of the sounds and volume pan was the adjusted so the sounds started quiet but then by the time it got to the argument they were as loud as could be building tension throughout the piece. After this edit was finished we were then ready for our constructive criticism from the class and project tutor.

The class feedback was really useful for us as it gave us ideas to make out piece stronger as a whole. Having reviewed the comments and feedback given we were to restructure the audio piece. The original sounds didn't have to be changed but the concept idea was tweaked. Instead of having the set of sequences and then the atmospheres like they were almost two separate pieces of work we could blend the two. Flashes of the footsteps and the atmospheres could be applied in the soundscape as one. This would build tension and much like Blue Velvet would create tension in a different way making the audience think something is not right. The whole piece would then be made up of all sequences. I re-edited the sound piece so that they blended but also took the argument voices out at the end as from the feedback seemed very untrue and fake which I had agreed with. This meant that the soundtrack was complete and we were able to look at the experimental film.

The idea for our experimental film was simple yet effective. We both had a strong idea of what we were going to film and what the story was going to be due to the soundscape we had created. Using the sequences we could film these house hold objects but my idea was to keep it filmed in close up to keep the identity of the character hidden until the end where the flashes of the argument would be intercut with the sequences. The job role I took was to be the cameraman and the D.O.P. and Heather agreed she would edit the piece. Another topic that came up was to stay away from student kitchens so having discussed locations we decided to go film at Heathers house in Leeds which turned out to be a good decision as the laminate worktops looked really nice on camera (Canon 60D with 50mm lens) and added a effect of mystery around the piece. When recording we didn't come across any problems as all the sounds in the sound piece we were able to re create this time filming them as close up shots. Heather was also able to come up with a couple of shot ideas that we could use such as placing the camera inside a cupboard. Having gained enough coverage and many shots to chose from and different white balances when it came to editing. All the shots taken were a variety of pans, tilts, statics and tracks which I decided on when exploring what looked effective in the frame of the camera for that certain house hold appliance.

I then gathered our two actors together to film the argument scenes and for the main actor the footstep scenes for the character he played. Again filming much of this close up we were able to show what kind of person the character was without giving their identity away. Tracking shots and close ups of fists would build tension as well as filming the close ups of footsteps.

The video edit was then created by Heather editing the footage I had shot along with a few shots Heather had helped to do to and was made linking it with sounds from the audio project.  I looked over it and helped with some of the fine cut as well as offering my opinion on certain shots that could be used in the edit. We didn't decided on a few but were able to come to a mutual agreement on the majority of them making it a successful process and overall a successful  piece.

I thought that overall the piece is exactly how we wanted it to work out. Having changed it from the original idea which looking back on it was the right decision due to the larger effect it has on the audience and now it gives of a bigger emotion. We managed our job roles well setting frequent deadlines for each other or suggesting ideas and constructive criticism for one another when helping into each other's roles. The final piece consists of a set of sequences looking at house hold appliances with the main character shot in close up and over time these gain in speed and diversity till at the end the flashes of the argument interchanged with the sequences the audience realize what the main character has done. The main problem and annoying disadvantage our piece may have compared to others is the actors  having used people that I knew from the class rather than trying to find some more close to professional standard ones, however for future reference I will use actors from the drama society and I'm sure over time I can pick and choose between actors that I like and could work well with. Creatively with the project having come up with the concept idea along with Heather I feel I have learnt how to structure and developed an idea. as well as how to  time manage between different roles setting deadlines for myself and learning key skills within production that I can use for future reference. Technically getting familiar with pro tools throughout the project even though we used soundtrack will be extremely helpful for future projects as well as revisiting and becoming familiar with final cut again. I see that there was room for improvement especially towards the end where the argument occurred but as I said this may have been due to the actors we were using and if we had different ones it would have given a stronger intent to the narrative and made the overall piece in a sense more real and believable.

Overall as a pair I feel Heather and I worked well together as we contributed towards the project fairly and equally managing our job roles well. I feel that our main strengths consisted of communication skills as well as being able to give each other positive but constructive criticism at times when it was needed. Scheduling our time also was key in our success to make the deadline and a good finished piece of work we could be proud of.  The one negative we have as a pair is that we can sometimes lose concentration and could take us a little longer than if we were to focus the whole time we were working, however in this time we sometimes came up with creative ideas towards the project. Overall I feel we spent a huge amount of time on this project and overall have accomplished what we set out to do by researching. creating, and producing our experimental film touching up on appropriate skills.

Final Editing Ready for Presentation

Soundtrack & Final Cut Pro Editing

Having received our crit we moved back into the edit suite. I re visited our soundtrack project adding in a couple more sequences to fill the time I took out for the argument and fight scene at the end. Having taken out the voices the sequences were edited really fast covered with lots of quick sounds one after another. We as a team liked the build up of volume towards the end and then the sudden sound f a kettle so decided to keep this aspect and focus onto editing. Having edited the sound Heather started work on re-editing the sequence with the improved soundtrack audio file. Having added more sequences that meant using the clips filmed more and cutting them finer so that the jump cuts were fast and liked up with the sound. Having worked on the edit for a substantial amount of time Heather had a break and I was able to finish the rapid cutting of the clips linking with the sequences as well as adding in the egg timer shot intercutting it with flashes of the argument making that more believable and the overall piece better than the previous sequence. We then exported the sequence through final cut as a quicktime at 25 fps, and using apple pro res 422 codec. Having exported it we then burnt the file onto a disk using toast titanium. The same was done for another low res version and burn as a quiktime. Also a final audio only file was burnt onto the disk representing the soundtrack.

Feedback from Crit and Class Viewing

Having re-visited the idea and added to and improved the soundtrack ad video we were optimistic going into the crit. Having shown the film the cirt we got back was not what we expected and a few negatives came up. However  these negatives were based around the same point within the film and aimed at the ending. So looking back at the feedback we decided that we would change the ending by adding ore sequences  to the current timeline so by the end all you see are flashes of the argument making it more believable and allowing the audience to feel more emotion and tension. What was also suggested was to make the egg timer more important by reflecting the time more as well as taking out the voices of the argument at the end within the argument scene as the class found it difficult to believe it positives however were that as a whole the class really liked the film, they thought it built tension nicely and understood the concept of the idea and what we were trying to accomplish. The class liked the way it was filmed and the colour grades  had put on while editing. The idea it was shot using close ups was also a positive.

Filming Experimental

Filming in Both Locations

My job role of filming I thought went well and in the end successfully, I was able to gather enough coverage and footage to be able to hand over to Heather for the edit. The majority of the shots were close up shots as this was what our idea from the start had been. I shot with a canon 60D dslr and a 50 mm lens and for a few shots a 18-55mm lens. All the shots consisted of either a static, pan, tilt, tracking or freehand movement some with focus pulls and for a couple zooms. I thought this gave the editor a variety of shots to choose from and having taken multiple takes for each set up of props used many shots could be linked in with the audio soundscape. I shot 25 frames a second and an aperture of 1.25. The white balanced changed due to the locations but was around 4000 - 6000, again as did the ISO but shot as close to 100 as possible depending on natural light. The argument scene contained many long shots of the location but then extreme close ups of the character to hide his identity. When recording we didn't come across any problems as all the sounds in the sound piece we were able to re create this time filming them as close up shots.

Editing Experimental Film

Final Cut Pro 7 Editing

Having filmed the experimental project with some ideas from Heather I handed it over to her to edit and gave some positive input and criticism suggesting in my opinion what worked well and what didn't as well as some technical help and advice when the first draft edit was completed.  The project was edited into sequences leading up to the fight scene at the end and the pace of the edit was quickened to link with the soundtrack. Linking up the shots with the sound was fair easy at first but when it came to the end with the fast tempo time and detail was needed. The edit took at lot longer than anticipated and spent many an hour completing it between Heather and myself. We like to think that we spent one of the longest times as a pair doing this project due to the idea of the sequences and the rapidness of the edit took a lot of fine picking and concentration between us to get it right but over all we are happy with the outcome.

Research and Inspiration - Blue Velvet by David Lynch

Blue Velvet by David Lynch

I wanted to research into this film as when I watched it the first thing that struck me was how powerful the opening was. When coming up with the idea for our own experimental film this gave me inspiration due to the way the soundtrack creates an atmosphere as well as the way its filmed. The film starts with vibrant pan shot of a white picket fence with a red rose. Not only is this a very symbolized object throughout the film but we can also hear the start of the Bobby Vinton song Blue Velvet. This song being a very traditional classic song really creates an atmosphere of peacefulness around the film but what is so brilliant about the opening sequence is the idea that little things start to creep in to make the audience uncomfortable. The odd sound of a dog barking loudly and then the odd shot of the kink in the hosepipe line allows the audience to think that something may be happening that is breaking this peaceful atmosphere.

Another brilliant edit was where the shot of the T.V. which had a gun scene showing and then cut from that to the character in the garden made myself as the audience realize that the character although in this peaceful atmosphere may be in danger and created tension. These little shots of possible dangers built tension but also gained speed when it came to the edit and pace of the film even though the soundtrack was calming it was uneasy as a viewer due to the tension built through the shot.

When editing the sound project I have used the inspiration the of little cut away shots to apply them into the soundtrack. When I comes to editing the experimental film we will be able to use these little cut away sounds to put the flashbacks of the character shown.

RE-Construction Of Audio Project Idea

The New and Re Developed Idea From The Feedback and Constructive Criticism

This is what our final Idea consist of. As u can see the narrative has been altered slightly but the main aspect tat we have changed coming from the feedback has been the structure. Both parts now link together by crossing over one another giving of the emotion of sadness and anger to the audience. It will also make the audience feel uncomfortable due to the soundscapes and shouting audio tracks being  mixed into one. We will also make sure that the sequences get substantially faster and gain in content as well as speed.

There is also in the spider diagram the start of an Idea for camera shots that I am visualizing for the experimental film. The house hold appliances would look nice shot close up and then as we want to keep the identity of our character a secret until the end ex stream long shots / close ups could be used along with the sequences and montage of audio files.

Audio Project Feedback

Constructive Criticism and Feedback From Audio Project

Overall the audience liked the concept of the audio project and all agreed it was a good narrative but they including myself now agree that the structure of it made it slightly confusing. What they suggested which I a going to change is that the sequences should be integrated with the second half of the audio project, i.e. the soundscape atmospheres and the shooting / arguments at the end. The audience liked the first set of sequences but believed that the speed of it could have been even more substantial than it already was to create a more uneasy atmosphere within the audience.

I think mixing the two parts of the project instead of almost starting the second part of it half way through is an interesting point and will definitely look at changing it. Cross mixing the 2 parts could be effective and give of an entirely different emotion to the audience and in this case more effective that my original Idea.

Editing Sound Project Continued

Editing Sound Project Continued

After lining up the first sequence of sounds the sequence was doubled by copying and pasting it and then joining it up with the previous sequence. this meant that both would play one after anther and the only difference between the two is when I changed the speed of the second to make it faster. A third sequence was then copied and again placed after the second being sped up even quicker than the previous so its a shorter sequence. After these three sequences were put into place we imported the atmospheres into soundtrack and trimmed / lined them up. The argument recordings were then put in after the journey through the atmospheres and put at the end of the 3 minuet project. The project was the burnt onto a disk using .tiff format and was ready for evaluation and feedback.

Editing Audio Project

Editing of The Audio Project

First off while recording the experimental piece my partner and I gathered together the resources (in this case audio files) over a matter of days across Sheffield city and also in my flat was able to record the sounds such as kitchen appliances and every day morning routine sounds like alarm clocks and water running from a tap. The atmospheres of the city were also recorded through the zoom mic and each of them lasted around a minuet

We started the editing process using soundtrack pro as this is software that both my partner and I are used to and thought it would be the most effective to use. We started by importing our sounds into soundtrack and selecting which ones we could use and which were either poor due to unnecessary background noise when recording.

We placed the Audio files individually on different tracks and then started to trim and cut them so that the clip contained just the sound we wanted. They were then aligned and placed next to each other and some of them overlapping. The first sequence of the morning routine was created.

Experimental Project- Chris Watson

Analysis and Research of Chris Watson Sound Recordist

I have decided to carry out some research on local sound recordist Christ Watson who has become one of the leading sound and audio producers working alongside the BBC and also specializing in wildlife and nature sounds. What Impresses me especially when going to listen to his work at an exhibition called 'inside the circle of fire' in the Millennium Gallery Sheffield was the detail and individual sounds that go alongside his main mix such as little bird or insect sounds that could sometimes be over heard by the other atmosphere sounds but nver the less added a huge effect when listening.

What Chris has also used is locations, the exhibition goes from rather extravagant wildlife locations but also very familiar ones too such as Bramall Lane football stadium including the chants from the crowd were to me and many other very familiar but gave a very different atmosphere than just a normal football stadium due to the way it was edited and put together.

What I was really impressed about was the fact that everyone had their owns visuals in their head and could imagine different things coming from the recordings. For example for the football stadium part I could actually imagine riots due to how he effected and edited together the sounds rather than just a football chant from the fans.

Altogether Chris has inspired me to dive deeper into the sound project so not only will I have enough sounds to choose from when it comes to editing but will have a selection that can be used to mx together and creat depth in the project.

Steel Homes

Steel Homes Analysis - Eva Webber 2008

Steel Homes (A short film/documentary) directed by Eva Webber (2008) was selected and won numerous awards from the 'Sundance Film Festival'. The short film explores the lives of people who have lost loved ones and are left with their loved ones belongings from the past which are stored in containers which they buy or rent. Eva explores the emotions of these people and what certain objects that their love ones left behind mean to certain individuals and the history that they can provide.

I really like the way that the director has used something that to most people means nothing but to certain individuals could mean so much and could give them memories from the past. I thought the idea of the film was very simple but brilliantly put together through the unscripted views of the people involved. I also really liked the first couple of minuets where the use of close up on the objects is used with a simple voice over the top of the sequence. It was effective and had some meaning behind it as the objects related to the voice over. Another aspect and technique I like that Eva used was the use of the long corridors in the location the filming the people at the bottom of them made it look as if they were isolated and insecure, wither this was meant or not I found it as an audience member very effective and interesting. The one aspect I wasn't to sure about was the location shots used as cut away's throughout and thought it could have been more effective if they filmed even more of the peoples emotions instead that they documenting.

Overall the film really explores how through objects people could express so much emotion and is really captured by the director through the shot choice and voice overs of the people who are being documented in the film.

Salaryman - Jake Knight

Research for Sound Project - Salaryman

The short film Salaryman by Jake Knight was a really key source in our research due to the concept of it and how the narrative is structured. For example it is all based around a businessman and what seems the endless routine of his everyday life. It really implies how the character is feeling and shows the audience what kind of life this man has through a sequence repeating itself and gaining speed until something as radical as for the character to get hurt changes his mundane and repetitive life. I like the short film because the sequences that are played throughout it really show the audience what kinda of person this character plays and how his life is portrayed. I like the idea of each sequence speeding up as it kept the audience interested in wanting to know what happenes when it gets to the end. For our idea I think we will use the idea of a sequence and use different speeds throughout our audio project. Things such as household appliances and a typical morning routine could be effective and engaging for the audience, they could also relate to it and then as fr as the second part of our audio project goes soundscapes of another sequence will be recorded.

Audio Project Intro

Our Idea & Exploration of it

Our Idea for our audio project is very much based around a routine that a person may find in a day such as house hold appliances and soundscapes that many people come across each day, what we also wanted to make sure of is that the audience doesn't know what sort of character is being portrayed. We decided to make the routine the persons morning routine so when at the end when the door closes we supposedly think that they have gone to work or along those lines. The first half would be a sequence of these sounds and then repeated 3 times and on each time gain speed. After this first set of sequences we would then instead of going into the same sequence would follow this persons journey through various. Our Idea for the character is that he will be involved in the selling of drugs and is involved on that particular day that we follow the character in a murder. At the end of the soundtrack there with be a fight or argument between 2 characters one of them being the character we have been following throughout and finally end on a gunshot to finish the soundtrack.
